TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — An error was found on the Vigo County election ballot and is being corrected, according to the county clerk’s office.
The error was a misspelling in the name of Democratic nominee for Governor of Indiana; Woodrow (Woody) Myers was incorrectly spelled Woodrow (Woody) Meyers. During an emergency Election Board meeting on Wednesday evening, the consensus was the misspelling was not egregious enough to cause voter confusion and all votes heretofore cast would be counted. New, corrected ballots would be out on Thursday.
“We are aware of the ballot misspelling, and we are working closely with the Indiana Election Division,” Vigo County Clerk Brad Newman said. “The Vigo County Clerk’s Office will provide additional information and updates as we move forward through the election process.”
The Vigo County Clerk’s Office said it has corrected the issue, and ballots will be correct as of the opening of early voting polls Thursday. The error does not change ballot order.
“Early proofs of the ballot were correct,” LeAnna Moore, Chief Deputy Clerk, said. “In communication with our third-party service, it was determined the error was a vendor mistake.”
The Myers campaign shrugged off the typo.
“We learned about the error and don’t feel there was any ill intent—we appreciate the Election
Board and all election staff, especially the county clerks, who continue to work hard under
extraordinary circumstances due to the pandemic,” read a statement by Brandon Evans, Co-Communications Director, Myers/Lawson campaign. “We know there are large numbers of early
and absentee voters who have already voted and we don’t want to disrupt the process. While we
feel the intent of voters will be clear, we do encourage the clerk to address the oversight from
this point forward.”
“The ballot versions that were reviewed by the Vigo County Clerk’s Office proof teams had the correct spelling of Myers,” states Ryan Shillito of RBM Consulting. “We take full responsibility for this issue and have corrected it immediately.”
