TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and local doctors are explaining why early detection is so important.
Greene County General Hospital recommend monthly self-exams if you notice any irregularity to consult your physician. A lump in the breast, changes in the texture of the breast and discharge from the nipple are just some of the symptoms to watch for.
“Early detection makes all the difference when it comes to breast cancer detection so that it increases your chances of survival and it gives you more options for treatment,” stated Greene County General Hospital RN, Nikki Page. “Age 40 would be a good time for anyone that doesn’t have any risk factors such a family history or doesn’t already have any issues or concerns.”
Though men have a smaller chance of having breast cancer, men should be tested too as there is still a chance men can have the cancer.
“I think that it’s very important for us as women, mothers and daughters to take time to put our own health and make it a priority so that we can continue to take care of other people,” explained Page.
Greene County General Hospital have precautions set in place for people worried about contracting COVID-19 while being screened.
