TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Vigo County Historical Museum will commemorate the 158th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation with a Facebook Live event, Emancipation Day in Terre Haute History, on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Dr. Crystal Mikell Reynolds, who has done extensive research on Terre Haute’s African American history, will give the presentation.
On Sept. 22, 1862 Abraham Lincoln signed the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, formally alerting the Confederacy of his intention to free all enslaved people held within the rebellious states. One hundred days later, President Abraham Lincoln issued the final Emancipation Proclamation.
Sept. 22nd became an annual day of celebration around the country and Terre Haute held some of the largest events in Indiana. Dr. Reynolds will explain how Emancipation Day was celebrated in Terre Haute in the late 19th century and how the famous abolitionist and statesman, Frederick Douglass, played a part in local history. There will also be an unveiling of a priceless historical treasure from the Vigo County Historical Museum’s collection.
