BRAZIL, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Brazil Public Library is receiving a ten-thousand-dollar grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York.
The library is an original Carnegie library, meaning it received money back from Andrew Carnegie in 1904 that allowed the library to open.
For the Brazil Public Library, this 10 thousand dollars means they can enhance their historic roots and preserve the library for years to come.
“I think that over the years, you know, it definitely has wear and tear, but I think the in the core it’s still got that essence. The woodwork is all the same and it might need a little bit of refreshing,” said Brazil Public Library Director, Sarah Trover.
Trover said there are many ways they can use the money, such as cleaning the limestone on the exterior or going toward a new roof. Trover said she wants the funds to cater to the older portions of the building and bring it back to life.
A unique aspect of this grant is that hundreds of Carnegie libraries are receiving this 10-thousand-dollar grant to not only celebrate the United States’ 250th anniversary, but also the importance of equal access.
“When we think about libraries, I think people really see them as books, but they really are one of the last places that you can be without spending any money and everyone has access and equal treatment,” said Trover.
The Brazil library has study rooms, computers, and much more, all available to the public with their library card. Trover said this grant will help the library continue to be a resource for the community to enjoy.
The Brazil Public Library said they have some exciting things planned for Halloween. The library is open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Halloween, with a trick-or-treat book giveaway where the community can receive a brand-new book.
