TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — One person was killed and another was taken into custody following an early morning shooting in downtown Terre Haute, police said Sunday.
In a news release, officers wrote that they were called to the 600 block of Wabash Avenue at about 2:30 a.m. after a report of shots fired.
“Upon arrival, officers located a victim and immediately began providing life-saving measures. At the same time, additional officers quickly located a suspect and took them into custody in the area along with a firearm,” the news release states. “Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect brandished a weapon for an unknown reason and discharged it, striking both himself and an innocent bystander.”
Officials added that the bystander later died from their injuries and that the suspect was taken into custody.
“At this time, there is no threat to the community. This remains an active investigation, and additional information will be released as it becomes available and appropriate,” officials wrote. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family and all those affected by this tragic incident.”
