VINCENNES, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — This Saturday, a movement to raise awareness for Parkinson’s Disease was held in Vincennes.
Those who have Parkinson’s, or know someone with it, gathered at Gregg Park Saturday morning. This event was hosted by the YMCA of Vincennes in partnership with Good Samaritan Hospital.
The group started with stretches, increasing mobility, and easing into the walk. Then the walk was a mile around the park with everyone moving at their own pace. Participants could also enjoy free refreshments and other activities such as boxing demonstrations and resource connections.
The goal of this event is to not only spread awareness, but to also empower those struggling with Parkinson’s to increase their mobility.
“To have the Parkinson’s community be active in their daily life because we see that exercise is medicine and we want to make sure to have the community be aware that mobility is very important in the community population. Not only for Parkinson’s, but also, for everybody,” said Joy Uy, physical therapist at Good Samaritan Hospital.
Good Samaritan Hospital has a Power Through Parkinson’s Support Group that meets once a month. To learn more about this support group visit Power Through Parkinson’s | Good Samaritan.
