VINCENNES, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— The Best Friends Animal Society is celebrating three states’ recent no-kill proclamations made by their governors by partnering with 38 shelters for an adoption event.
On October 18, 38 shelters and rescue groups across Iowa, Indiana, and Kansas will be running events to keep adoption fees for pets to $50 or less in an effort to help find them their forever homes. More than 2,500 pets will be up for adoption across the participating organizations. Hours and fees will vary by location, so it is encouraged to check with participating shelters before visiting.
“Adopting is one of the most powerful ways to save the lives of dogs and cats and help take Indiana, Iowa, and Kansas no-kill,” said Castle. “If you can’t adopt right now, consider fostering, volunteering, or even sharing adoptable pets on social media. Even the smallest action can help pave the way for a day when no pet is killed simply because it doesn’t have a safe place to call home.”
Two participating organizations can even be found right here in the Wabash Valley. The Parke Vermillion County Humane Society and the Vincennes Animal Shelter will both be participating.
These three states were chosen due to commitments made since August by the governors of each state, marking a dedication to save the lives of every healthy and treatable dog and cat in each state’s shelters. No-kill is defined by a 90% save rate for animals entering a shelter.
“Having the support of Kansas Governor Laura Kelly, Indiana Governor Mike Braun, and Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds shows us that the no-kill movement is gaining momentum in the Heartland,” said Julie Castle, CEO, Best Friends Animal Society. “No-kill is about getting pets out of shelters and into loving homes, not about warehousing pets, turning them away, or simply transferring them elsewhere. But shelters and rescue groups cannot do this work alone, and one of the best ways people can help is by choosing to adopt rather than purchase their next pet.”
