TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Keegan Chambers is only a sophomore at Northview High School, but at just 16 years old, he already knows what career path he wants to take.
“I’ve always wanted to be a firefighter because of my dad”, Chambers said. “I want to help people that are in need, the people who can’t help themselves and are in really bad situations.”
With the help of his dad, Keegan got in touch with Chief Cody Barnard of the Posey Township Volunteer Fire Department. They were looking to start a cadet program.
“Every department has their problems, but having too many people is definitely not one of them”, Barnard said. “We’re always trying to be creative and innovative in trying to figure out how we can get people involved.”
Keegan has become the first cadet in the program, training with the department all summer.
“Just the basics so far is what I’ve had like throwing ladders, learning your gear, hose trainings, all kinds of different stuff, even search and rescue”, Chambers said.
Keegan is still two years away from being able to complete his state firefighter certification, but that hasn’t stopped his progress.
“He came to every single training and did everything, just like the other folks did”, Barnard said. “He was one of our harder workers and he did everything. Unfortunately, because of his age, he wasn’t able to take the state test.”
In two short years, Keegan will be able to take the test and become a firefighter.
“Once I turn 18, I want to join the fire department full time, then I’m possibly thinking of a career in it”, Chambers said.
The Posey Township Fire Department is looking to continue its cadet program. If you are interested in joining or just want to learn more, you can visit their website here.
