TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Terre Haute City Council held a special meeting to speak with Mayor Brandon Sakbun about the proposed 2026 budget.
As the mayor reviewed the budget, council members asked a few questions but did not express any concerns. President of the Council, Todd Nation, says that if it weren’t for money the city received from the casino, they would have had to make cuts to the budget.
Nation says the city received around six million dollars from the casino. However, he adds that while that money is helpful for this budget, it may not always be reliable.
“The other point that the mayor made, which I make bares repeating about casino money is that it will rise for the first couple of years. Plateau for a couple years, maybe a little longer. And then begin to fall. So, it’s not something that will save us forever, but it has saved us for now.”
The council will vote on the city’s budget on October 2, followed by a vote on the sanitary budget on October 9. All information regarding these budgets is available on the city’s website.
