TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — At Thursday’s Terre Haute City Council meeting the issue of homelessness was front and center.
The proposed and now withdrawn ordinance 12, stated that sleeping on sidewalks, streets, alleys, or within doorways were prohibited. According to Mayor Brandon Sakbun, the ordinance would have never passed, and tonight he proposed a taskforce to help the homeless.
The mayor said he wants to appoint 2-3 council members to be on the taskforce.
President of the city council, Todd Nation said many steps have been taken to address the homeless problem.
“We have taken steps in this direction. We’ve got a long way to go though, and I applaud the mayor and the administration and the people who came tonight and shared their stories and the work that they do with us to try to keep the ball moving forward on this,” said Nation.
In the coming weeks, the mayor said he will provide more information about the taskforce.
