TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— Ivy Tech was harvesting and giving out fresh sweet corn to people in the community, as well as giving some of the sweet corn to Catholic Charities.
Students in the agriculture and precision agriculture classes at Ivy Tech went to the field next to First Southern Baptist Church. People could get a bag of fresh sweet corn and donate to the school’s Ag Department. People who came also got to see their corn getting harvested.
Department Chair of the Ag and Precision Ag departments, Michael Mauntel, explained what the money raised from the donations will go towards.
“The donations will go to utilized within the program for one they help fund the sweet corn growth next year, of everything that goes into this,” Mauntel said. “With taking care of the field, the chemicals that we use, and things like that. But also, it’ll help with different other activities that we use. We take trips throughout the year and also help with activities in the greenhouse that we do on campus.”
The school also donated around ten pallets of sweet corn to Catholic Charities as well once all the corn was harvested.
