TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — More than 10 infant deaths were reported in Indiana in August.
Local leaders said they are working to stop this crisis.
“It’s vital. As we continue to communities, families, and children are the beginning of that,” said Alicia Amazan, Nurse Supervisor for Goodwill NFP’s West Region.
Nurse-Family Partnership is a national program, running for over 40 years. The program was brought to Indiana in 2011. Since then, they have seen Indiana infant mortality at an all-time low, at a little over 6 percent. But in August, there was a rise in infant mortality, and the main cause was dangerous sleeping conditions.
This program not only teaches new mothers how to care for their new infant, but also how to take care of themselves.
“And we have seen a lot of improvement since they do work towards their goals as far as higher-paying jobs, going back for further education, as well as larger economic self-sufficiency,” said Amazan.
Nurses are paired with families from infancy up to 2 years of age. These nurses provide families with extensive evidence-based resources, and families can use them for help with mental health resources, health concerns, child developmental concerns, and more.
“Watching them grow and learn different skills to work with their children. I’ve seen mental health get better as well as child developmental skills get better,” said Liza Knopp, Nurse Home Visitor for Goodwill NFP’s West Region.
The nurses are not only a resource, but they are also a support system. Showing new moms how to keep their babies safe when they sleep. That includes avoiding co-sleeping, no blankets and pillows in the crib, or not allowing infants to sleep on their stomachs.
According to Senior Director Lynn Baldwin, the goal is to help families accomplish whatever their hearts desire.
“The nurse’s relationship with the mother and the family is so significant to the families because they truly do develop a trusted relationship with them. They are connecting with them frequently; they will meet with them every other week, at least throughout the life of the program,” said Baldwin.
A relationship that can not only help a new family but also save a life. If you are a first-time parent, this program can give you support and ensure you and your baby stay healthy.
