TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — There are a number of organizations and services for adults who have experienced loss, but there are few for children.
That’s why, 25 years ago, Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes began Camp Memiki.
Camp Memiki is a free annual grief camp for children ages 6 to 13 that have lost a loved one.
On September 27th, children and volunteers will meet at Ouabache Trails Park for games and entertainment, but also mental health exercises.
Bereavement Coordinator for Good Samaritan, Jamie Kroeger, said adults can be overwhelmed by grief, even with their extended life experience. Therefore, kids need more help as the feeling of loss is new to them.
“With grief comes a lot of complex, intense emotions that are probably new to children”, Kroger said. “We try to help them learn how to cope with those feelings and emotions, how to process those, as well as hear from other kids who are experiencing similar things, so they realize they are not the only one going through these difficult and new things.”
If you are interested in your child being a part of Camp Memiki, you can register on the Good Samaritan website here.
