TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— New businesses continue to pop up along State Road 46 on Terre Haute’s east side.
Businesses like Chipotle, Azzip Pizza, Quik Trip, and several more are coming along. Chipotle is scheduled to officially open on Tuesday. There’s also the possibility of some development in the works near the airport. It’s thanks to a grant of $664,000 awarded to the city.
Terre Haute city engineer Marcus Maurer said east side development is happening for many reasons.
“The casino opening and having an interstate exit right there, there’s a lot of traffic that funnels that way,” Maurer said. “There’s also a lot of opportunity; there’s still open ground to develop along New Margaret. Although that’s starting to diminish on what’s available, but we also have plans for more stuff and more expansions.”
Part of that expansion will be the possibility of nearly 1,000 acres to be used near the airport, thanks to the expansion of Hunt Rd. and College Ave., which will take both roads closer to the airport.
“We’re doing a study phase that’s going to lead to hopefully more improvements that can open up nearly 1000 acres,” Maurer said. “The unique part about this one is maybe not as important of an area for the fast food, or the commercial or retail type developments, as it doesn’t have the highway frontage. This would be a great opportunity for warehousing and industry, hopefully some airport-related items that can lead to some really, really good jobs.”
This could also help the Air National Guard base near the airport, as it can help bring more utilities to them while also benefiting the city. The continuation of New Margaret Ave. to Old Margaret Ave. could bring over 100 acres of land to develop on, too, if approved.
