Vigo County, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— Jordan Orwig was announced last week as the new executive director of the Vigo County Public Library.
Orwig will oversee the library’s three current locations and help with any ideas or projects that his staff is working on. He will also help maintain the library’s budget and represent the library at public events or any city and county meetings that could affect the library.
Orwig first started at the library in 2024 as the Director of Public Services, having previously worked as the director at the Sullivan County Public Library for nearly a decade. He was then announced as the interim executive director earlier this year, following Kristi Howe’s step down from the same position. As executive director, he wants to help maintain the visions he saw while working with Howe as he steps into his new role.
“I think Kristi was a visionary,” Orwig said. “I think that she had a lot of great ideas and things that she has accomplished here. Most recently, the biggest one probably is the opening of the 12 points branch that we had, so I think that she recognized the library’s position in the community, and I think overall just maintaining our relevance for the community and all the different ways that we impact everyone in our public.”
Orwig has one goal in mind for the library, and that is to be there for the community no matter what the need is.
“We have a lot of people who come in that are coming in for different reasons,” Orwig said. Whether they just heard about the new Stephen King book coming out, or maybe they heard about some book on NPR, or maybe they’re coming in because their internet is bad at home, and they’re coming in to use our computers, or they’re coming in for a story time. So, I would want to make sure that we’re continuing to meet the needs of the public and our customers.”
