KNOX COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A Knox County man is in custody after police say he crashed his side-by-side and injured a passenger while driving with a blood alcohol content three times the legal limit.
According to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to South Hoods Road Sunday afternoon for a UTV accident involving injuries. Upon arrival, deputies located a Yamaha side-by-side in a cornfield on its side.
“A 27-year-old identified as Jared Cummins stated that he was the driver when the wreck occurred. Jared was unsteady on his feet, and his eyes were red and bloodshot,” said the sheriff’s office.
The sheriff’s office said Cummins then failed a field sobriety test and refused any further testing. A warrant for a blood draw was then granted, and preliminary results showed he had a blood alcohol content of .277, three times the legal limit, according to police.
A 24-year-old passenger in the side-by-side received an open fracture on his left knee and needed emergency orthopedic surgery.
Cummins was taken to jail and charged with operating while intoxicated, resulting in serious bodily injury, a level 5 felony.
