WORTHINGTON, Ind. (WWO/WAWV) — Toni Jeffers is the official costumer and seamstress for Indiana Fever Freddy and the Pacers Boomer.
You might have seen the many outfits Freddy sports, each curated with intention. She said she finds inspiration for outfits everywhere she looks. Other times, Indiana Fever will explain their vision and Jeffers will bring it to life. Jeffers said if you can dream it, she can create it, since she is able to easily visualize the patterns in her head.
“I started just doing little repairs and we started talking design and before you know it, I got to make just incredible costumes and I get to refurbish and repair them,” said Jeffers.
Jeffers first found her talent and passion for creating when she tried out her mother’s sewing machine at the age of six. She says been doing this for 25 years and it’s her full-time job. Jeffers also said certain parts of mascots take time.
“Freddy’s smile. I have a pattern for it and every now and then, you know, you need some dentistry done. You know, so I can take care of that. Sometimes we have to replace the eye bulbs. It all just really depends. but anywhere to, a couple hours, to several weeks depending on how complicated the costume or the project is,” said Jeffers.
Her process is a team effort, with fittings to ensure sure the alterations fix perfectly, as well as incorporating trends the mascot may want to participate in. Jeffers works closely with the Indiana Fever and Pacers to create costumes that connect with the fans.
“We’ve kind of come up with different ideas, especially with the fans. you know what i mean. we want to make him really enjoyable to everyone and if I can make something that brings a smile to somebody’s face or makes everybody laugh,” said Jeffers.
Jeffers hopes to continue to bring joy to others through those designs. she also does wedding dress alterations and costume design for plays. You can be on the lookout for Freddy or boomers next outfit, created by Jeffers.
