TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— Ivy Tech Community College welcomed over 100 new students to their school of nursing orientation.
Students got to learn about what it takes to be a student in the nursing program at Ivy Tech and also meet some of the local health care leaders in the Wabash Valley. Some of the hospitals represented at orientation were Union Health, Terre Haute Regional Hospital, Horizon Health, Good Samaritan Hospital, and Sullivan County Community Hospital.
Due to the popularity of the program, more people apply than they can allow in so it is a select admissions program, and they do it based on a points system the nursing school has from students’ general education classes as well as tests students can take.
Ivy Tech encourages anyone to apply for the nursing school, and there are no age restrictions on who wants to apply because the school wants the students to join the program when they feel ready to and don’t feel forced into joining right after high school.
The Dean of the School of Nursing, Kim Cooper, said the nursing program has one goal in mind.
“Our goal is to provide the citizens in Indiana with the safest, best healthcare we can,” Cooper said. “We believe that here at Ivy Tech, we’re offering that opportunity to come in, to get that education, that education is recognized throughout, not just the Wabash Valley, but throughout the state as being a premier education in nursing.”
Sophomore at Ivy Tech, Addi Osburn knew Ivy Tech would be a good choice for her because it is close to home and a great program.
“I wanted to stay at home, and I wanted to commute because I didn’t want to leave my dog,” Osburn said. “A lot of people in my family are healthcare workers, and it really inspired me, and I just want to make an impact on other people’s lives.”
Director of Clinical Education at Union Health, Amy Allen, knows this partnership with Ivy Tech is beneficial to both the school and Union Health.
“They have helped us develop several really amazing student programs,” Allen said. Particularly, the nurse apprenticeship program that helps guide students through their path as a nursing student. So, we are always excited to support new students in our community and new registered nurses.”
