FARMERSBURG, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Residents of Farmersburg will soon have a new space to play basketball and pickleball as construction is underway at George Heap Memorial Park.
Originally, city officials planned to have just a half-court basketball space.
However, the kids of beloved Farmersburg resident Jim Lear became involved, and the project has expanded to a full basketball court and two pickleball courts.
The projects has been funded by the city of Farmersburg, as well as many donations and help from the town council, park board, and friends of the park.
Dave Scott is one of the Friends of George Heap Memorial Park. He said, because of Lear’s legacy and his kid’s involvement in the project, the court will be named after him.
“Jim Lear was 96 years old when he passed on”, Scott said. “He had been strong in the community for basketball through the years. His children donated the money to get the basketball goals started and it became our bless to have that money come in, so it certainly deserved to be named the Jim Lear Memorial Basketball Courts.”
The recent storms and rain have delayed progress on the basketball and pickleball courts, but everyone involved is expecting the project to be done by the end of the summer.
