TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A couple of weeks ago, Terre Haute Mayor Brandon Sakbun asked for resident feedback on railways, and now the city is taking the next steps.
The city of Terre Haute is now working with CSX, a private railway company, to upgrade tracks in need of repair.
The top two railways that residents voiced concern over were Ernie Canal and Maragret then Third Street and Vorhees.
Sakbun said working with companies like CSX will get those railways repaired quicker than waiting on state of federal funding.
Residents have also shared complaints about wait times at train tracks. Sakbun said they will continue to share those with CSX as they look for better options in the future.
“If you call that CSX 1-800 style number, call and report it every single time”, Sakbun said. “The best thing that we can do is overload their systems with frustrations. There is nothing that the mayor’s office can really do about it, we call and institute complaints ourselves. What we are doing is looking at different camera and alerting technologies to put something on our website to show what crossings are blocked and how long they’ve been blocked.”
Mayor Sakbun said they are in the process of working on a way, such as an app or website, to view railroad activity, but it is still in the early stages of development.
