VINCENNES, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The heat wave we’ve been experiencing is not only uncomfortable it can also pose a danger to your health. We visited good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes to see how the heat has affected community members.
Amanda Siewers, director of emergency departments at this hospital said the number of people coming into the ER due to heat exhaustion is low and it might be due to people listening to the heat advisories and their bodies.
Signs of heat exhaustion include dizziness, nausea and muscle cramps. Siewers recommends constantly holding a bottle of water in your hand, so you remember to stay hydrated.
She added that although the heat advisory ends tonight, heat exhaustion can still occur in lower temperatures.
“There doesn’t need to be a heat advisory for it to make you sick, so always make sure you’re taking those frequent breaks and that you’re listening to your body and you’re staying hydrated, even just because you don’t feel that way, does not mean that you’re not being affected by it and it can happen really quickly,” said Siewer.
During the summer, it’s important to continue to remain vigilant when out in the heat.
