TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A reminder of space heater safety as temperatures continue to decrease.
The local Terre Haute Fire Department shared tips on how to use a space heater safely. When using a heater, never keep it on overnight or leave it unattended. Make sure the heater is on a flat surface and at least three feet from any objects, pets, or children.
Plug the heater directly into the wall and do not use an extension cord. Using an extension cord can cause the cord to overload. Check that you purchase a heater with a seal of a qualified testing laboratory.
“Also, make sure that it has an auto shut-off. If it tips over or a thermostat, if it gets too hot, it will automatically shut off. That will help prevent unintended fires,” said Nick Arnold, Terre Haute Fire Department Public Information Officer.
Arnold also said to make sure to change your smoke detector and carbon monoxide batteries during this time change.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, 2 in 5 deaths in space heater fires involve portable electric space heaters. Types of electric space heaters are:
- Oil or water-filled radiator
- Fan-forced heater
- Ceramic heater
- Infrared heater
Never block an exit with a space heater and make sure it is turned off and unplugged before going to sleep.
