TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Friends of a recent shooting victim have created a memorial on Wabash Avenue, but they’re calling the situation a tragic accident.
Jacqueline Swaim said she was with a group of friends, including Skyleen Ross, after hanging out at a local nightclub. Swaim said Ross was about a block behind her, next to Javon Wilson, when she heard a gunshot.
“I heard it go off and something just didn’t feel right, so I turned around and I see my sister on the ground with Destiny on top of her trying to stop the bleeding”, Swaim said.
Swaim said Wilson was trying to unload the firearm and accidentally fired and hit Ross, but Swaim said she’s not using the word blame.
“Javon did not intentionally take Skyleen’s life”, Swaim said. “For everyone praying for the victim’s family, please understand that not only did we lose Skyleen, but we also lost Javon too that night.”
Friends and family of Ross have created a memorial on Wabash Avenue where the incident took place. A section is covered with flowers, heartfelt messages, and Ross’s favorite items. Swaim said she’s been there every day.
“I come here just to spend time with her so I can remember”, Swaim said. “That’s what I’m so scared of, I’m so scared of not being able to remember.”
Swaim said she was worried about speaking on the incident at first, but after talking with Ross’s family, she felt it would make a difference for the better.
