TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— Leaves are beginning to fall, and that means it’s time to start raking them and getting them out of your yard.
With the dry weather around the valley, there’s a county-wide burn ban in effect for Vigo County. That means, if you live outside of city limits, you’re only allowed to burn in an approved fire ring. But, burning anything within city limits is prohibited, and burning leaves in the city is illegal even without a burn ban. If you burn anything outside city limits, make sure you have taken the proper safety precautions.
“If you do decide to burn in the county, and you do burn inside that approved fire ring, always, always, always, have that means of extinguishment right next to you,” said Captain Nick Arnold of the Terre Haute Fire Department. “Never leave that fire, even if it’s just to go inside real quick. Always keep an eye on it, always wet down the area around it, obviously, a hose is best, a fire extinguisher will work, but just be very careful.”
Leaf pick up for the city of Terre Haute starts in November. The Terre Haute Street Department will have more information on pickup schedules in the coming weeks.
