TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — George Orwell’s classic warning about fascism and other frequently banned books will be part of a big month of events at the Vigo County Public Library.
First up in October is National Banned Books Week on October 5 through October 11 and the library has themed this year’s event after the George Orwell classic “1984”. The library is planning a Banned Books Scavenger Hunt in which participants will find hidden posters at all three branches featuring books that are often a topic of challenge in the United States. Each time you complete a hunt at one of the three branches, you will receive a ticket to be entered in a drawing for a special prize pack filled with banned book–themed treasures. The hunt will run through the end of the month.
Another big event the library is holding in October is its Halloween Book Giveaway from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on October 24. This event will be a part of the much larger Haunted Haute event going on through Terre Haute. Residents downtown, enjoying the festivities, can stop by the library’s main branch to choose a scary book to take home. Families can also visit the selfie station to take photos with their new books. Costumes are not required but are encouraged.
