TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Terre Haute Police Department arrested drug dealers, armed robbery suspects, and also made multiple arrests in downtown Terre Haute as part of a new initiative to crack down on crime in the city.
The department announced the arrests on Monday with more information about their new program in downtown Terre Haute.
During a press conference last week, Terre Haute Mayor Brandon Sakbun, along with the police department, announced the expansion of what they called “proactive policing” initiatives throughout the city.
The initiative is named the Safe Neighborhoods & Property Crime Initiative (SNPCI).
Mayor Sakbun said during the initiative, there will be a larger police presence downtown to help lower crime.
“This is just the start of our operation to reduce property crime and keep our neighborhoods safe,” said Mayor Sakbun. “I am proud of our local police officers for rising to the challenge and excelling when given the opportunity. We need programs like this to reverse the fake perception that our city is unsafe. We are doing our part locally to keep this city safe.”
THPD said since the initiative was announced, the effort has resulted in multiple arrests and significant drug seizures, which includes:
- Officers executed several narcotics investigations resulting in the seizure of approximately 896 grams of methamphetamine, 2.4 grams of crack cocaine and a quantity of marijuana.
- Officers also seized approximately 9 grams of methamphetamine and more than 100 hydrocodone pills.
- THPD units responded to a robbery in progress at the Rodeway Inn. Two suspects were arrested and charged with armed robbery, burglary and aggravated battery.
- Officers responded to an ATM burglary. The suspect was not located at the scene but is believed to have been later apprehended in Posey County in connection with related offenses.
THPD said officers also made five misdemeanor arrests while patrolling downtown Terre Haute.
“Each week, our officers continue to demonstrate a proactive commitment to community safety through coordinated enforcement, investigative follow-up, and rapid response,” said THPD Chief Kevin Barrett. “These results reflect our department’s focus on reducing violent and property crimes while maintaining a visible presence in our community.
