TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Get ready for an event full of flavor. Fall is on our doorsteps and that means it’s chili time.
Over at the Vigo County Fairgrounds this Saturday, there will be the Annual Chili Cook-off, where you can taste many different chilis from local chefs.
Around 30 chefs are participating, with each bringing 5 gallons of chili. During this cook-off, the community can vote for their favorite chili, shop from local vendors, and talk to chefs. There are three categories people can vote in: people’s choice, spicy chili, and showmanship.
“Come down, have some chili, enjoy yourself. See some people in the community. You know, all these people that take the time to cook and interact with them. Thank them. It’s a great time and it’s a great way to support the children of the Wabash Valley,” said Brad Newman, chairman for the Chili Cook-off with the Terre Haute Breakfast Optimist Club.
Not only is this a fun-filled day, but the funds help support scholarships for local students.
The Terre Haute Breakfast Optimist Club is the host of the event, and they give out 6 scholarships, two to each area high school. Newman said they’ve helped about 4200 kids in the last year and a half.
Tickets are a dollar a piece for each sample.
“We enjoy doing this for these things for the kids and it’s chili for the children. That’s what we nickname it. So, it’s a good time. It really is,” said Newman.
Newman also said this event always has a great turnout and said he expects anywhere from 1000 to 1300 people to stop in.
This cookoff is Saturday, October 4th, from 11 am to 4pm. at the Vigo County Fairgrounds. Make sure to check it out.
