EDGAR COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Edgar County Fire Chiefs are issuing a burn advisory throughout the county due to “extreme dryness and ongoing drought conditions,” according to a press release.
According to Paris Fire Department Chief Zack Janis, prolonged lack of rainfall, along with low soil moisture and humidity, has prompted the advisory. Janis added that dry vegetation throughout the county can also act as fuel to a fire.
“These conditions can cause fires to ignite easily and spread rapidly, even from small flames or sparks,” said Janis.
During the advisory, all forms of open burning are discouraged, including bonfires, recreational fires, agricultural burning, brush/yard waste burning, and burning of trash or debris.
It’s advised that people use extreme caution while using grills, fire pits and outdoor equipment. Any non-essential burning should be postponed until conditions improve and people should avoid parking vehicles on dry grass.
The Paris Fire Department advises keeping water sources and fire extinguishers nearby when using outdoor flame tools, and if you see a fire, report it immediately to 911.
