SULLIVAN, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Preparations are being rolled out across Sullivan for their upcoming corn festival.
This festival is a tradition going back 69 years. For the city of Sullivan, the corn festival is a tradition, but for one man, it’s a passion. Steve Simmons has been involved with this festival since the age of 19.
“I’ve seen the festival probably grow five folds since the old day. The festival used to be just on the square and now we’re expanded just a block and a half north with the entertainment here at the plaza and the square is packed with the carnival and everything, so the crowds are much bigger,” said Simmons.
Drawing in larger crowds, but also larger names in music. Bands are coming from all over the United States and one from Canada. Opening night is a Bon Jovi tribute, Thursday is a Doobie Brothers tribute, and Friday is a Barracuda Heart tribute.
The last band, playing Saturday, ties together the theme of the festival, “Small town life” with the band Scarecrow, as a John Mellencamp tribute.
“There’s something for everyone. We have a world-class amusement. Luehrs’ ideals rides on the square. A really nice carnival. We have music up here on the plaza. Live music at 8pm every night,” said Simmons.
Other activities include a beer garden and something new this year, a turtle derby. Make sure to bring a chair to this festival for the live music. Tickets are currently available at a discounted price of 10 dollars off.
You can purchase these at the Sullivan Public Library in the children’s section downstairs. Though, don’t worry, tickets are still able at the gates and this year it’s cash-only.
Four nights of fun in downtown Sullivan with all proceeds from the festival going to Sullivan Rotary Club. This festival will run from September 17th until the 21st.
According to Simmons, this festival couldn’t occur without generous sponsors. He said thanks to all.
