WABASH VALLEY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A local woman’s inspirational story of overcoming addiction is just one of the many voices in the novel, “Stories of Transgression and Recovery”.
Shonna Frye is a recovered drug user and dealer who said she found light when she was at her lowest. Now she makes it her mission to make sure no one else feels alone. Frye is a certified peer recovery coach, and she said she tries to make an impact on a life every day.
“Daily, I have people either message me, or that see me in person, or at any recovery event, on social media, will reach out to me and either tell me how inspired they are by me or ask for help for themselves or a family member,” said Frye.
“Stories of Transgression and Recovery” is the newest installment of the “Stories of” series. It’s written by eight authors from all over the United States and some from Australia. This book is a collection of stories. That includes anything from previous sex workers to families who share their loved ones struggles.
Author Trunnis Goggins went to high school with Frye, saw her through Facebook, and was amazed by her story of recovery.
“When I first saw her come on Facebook, she was in a half-way house and today, she is now counseling people to get out of addiction at the very jail she had to wait to stand trial and it’s a great testament and it actually gives further evidence to my book, “Stories of Transgression and Recovery”, that you can make it,” said Goggins.
Frye says even though her story is condensed into only a chapter, she said it’s still very powerful.
“There’s so much covered in that that will hopefully give hope and inspiration to so many who are still struggling in addiction or have had struggled with addiction, but I’m just amazed and very, very honored,” said Frye.
This book will launch on September 19th at 5 p.m. and will be available a Barnes and Noble, Amazon, and later as an audiobook, and at independent bookstores. There is a unique aspect of the audiobook version: each author will be reading their own chapter. Frye’s said her story is proof there is light at the other side and it’s okay to need help to get there.
September is National Recovery Month, if you or someone you know is struggling with addiction, Frye said to reach out to her or click here for Vigo County Resources.
