TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A Terre Haute man charged with attempted murder after allegedly shooting two people appeared in court Thursday for a pretrial hearing.
Jaquincee B.M. Burns has been charged with one count of attempted murder, two counts of aggravated battery, and criminal recklessness, after an alleged incident in December that left two people hospitalized from gunshot wounds.
According to the Terre Haute Police Department, on December 26, 2024, uniformed officers responded to reports of shots fired near Center St. and Seabury Ave.
During their investigation, officers allegedly located shell casings, an apartment that had been struck by gunfire, and multiple witnesses who reported that those involved fled before police arrival.
Officers were also informed that a possible victim of the shooting was being treated at a local hospital for gunshot wounds.
One of the victims had sustained a “grazing bullet wound” on his leg. Another victim had life-threatening injuries as a result of gunshot wounds and was transported to an Indianapolis-area hospital for treatment, said THPD.
THPD Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators said that, during their investigation, they learned that both victims had planned on meeting the alleged suspect, Jaquincee B. M. Burns, 19, of Terre Haute, to engage in a fight. THPD said the victims were then led down an alleyway near 7th St. and Hulman St., and then were allegedly ambushed and shot at by Burns.
Burns was then taken into custody in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, with help from the U.S. Marshal Task Force Officer, on January 8, 2025. He was then extradited to Vigo County.
On Thursday, Burns appeared in Vigo Superior Court 6 for his pretrial conference. Burns will appear in court next for a jury trial on November 3.
