VINCENNES, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— The Knox County community is invited to attend the annual Suicide Prevention Walk at Vincennes University’s outdoor track.
September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, and several agencies in the Vincennes area are coming together on September 6 to make an impact. The walk provides time for those affected by suicide to come together and share their stories and help with the healing process. The news release states that sharing these stories can provide insight and possible warning signs that can be used by others during a time of crisis. Community resource agencies will also be in attendance to provide information on programs and services.
Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the United States, according to the National Institute for Mental Health. More than 49,000 people claimed their own lives in the U.S. in 2022. In 2022, statistics show 59.3 million people, or 1 in 5 adults, in the country struggle with mental health issues throughout the year. The release states that more than 1,100 Hoosiers die from suicide each year, and 13.2 million adults have serious thoughts of suicide across the country each year.
Check-in for the race begins at 8:30 a.m., and participants can choose their length from .5 miles, one mile, two miles, three miles, or five miles. Opening ceremonies will begin at 9 a.m., and the walk will begin following the ceremonial first lap led by members of the Wabash Valley Friendship Clubhouse.
