TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO-WAWV) — Six weeks post op I started physical therapy at ATI .
The people there are great. Two to three days per week for six weeks they put me through various exercises.
Now I should point out that I love working out. I lift weights 5 to 6 times at week at the gym.
I also tried to rehab my leg on my own, but the physical therapy was better. They know what they’re doing.
ATI therapists had me do some very basic movements. Each session started with 10 minutes on a stationery bike. Just balancing on a rocker board was a bit of a challenge. Stepping up and down on a foam pad doesn’t sound all that challenging, but the movements got my attention, early on.
After more stability and strength exercises, I moved to a table for scar tissue scraping. It’s a technique used to break down scar tissue.
Cupping was also used. This therapy lifts and separates the tissue layers, breaking up adhesion and hopefully improving mobility. I have to admit the scraping and the cupping really did seem to help.
I believe diet is also important. It’s vital. It’s been said, success in the gym begins in the kitchen. I truly believe that you are what you eat, you are what you do.
I eat Lots of protein (which is pretty easy because I’m a carnivore), and predominately avoid carbs and sugars.
The results: boundless energy, no medication, rarely sick, no brain fog, fantastic gut health. It might be for everyone, but it works for me. And I believe it’s speeding up my recovery.
And so is my physical therapy.
We even discovered another injury from the bike accident. A sharp burning pain developed in my elbow. I told my physical therapist about it and through an ultra sound he determined that my ulnar nerve or funny bone had inflammation. It doesn’t affect my movements or strength, but I have to avoid direct contact with the nerve. Hopefully it will improve with time.
Week after week I went through progressively harder exercises and everything seemed to be going well, until a bit of set back in week 5 of my therapy. But that will be discussed in Part 4, and well, it was unexpected and serious.
However it won’t prevent me from my approach to Get Out and Get Going
