DUGGER, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— People might know what volleyball or beach volleyball are, but many might not know about chair volleyball. It is similar to the original sport but with a couple of differences, and it is becoming popular in the town of Dugger, IN.
On Thursdays in the Dugger Community Center. People show up for laughs, exercise, and fun in the form of chair volleyball. Pam Brewer helped create the idea of hosting chair volleyball, back at the end of June, at the community center each week with Mary Smith, after Brewer learned about chair volleyball on a recent trip to Florida.
“I was first introduced to chair volleyball in Florida,” Brewer said. “It was so much fun, and we thought we would come and share it with our community. It’s been like a highlight of our week now. Who knew you can have so much fun sitting in a chair?”
“Pam sent us a message, and wanted to know if we wanted to play, and we’re like, yeah,” Smith said.
Chair volleyball has some different rules and regulations that people play with compared to regular volleyball.
“We play with a lighter ball, the net is lower,” Brewer said. “We sit in our chairs, you’re not supposed to get out of your chair, so if you do get out of your chair, then it’s the other team’s ball.”
This is a weekly fee to play chair volleyball to help cover the cost of renting the space in the community center in the morning, but that doesn’t stop people from coming out and having a good time.
“I think everybody enjoys it,” Smith said. “I mean, when you have repeat customers, they come.”
“It’s just so much fun,” Brewer said. “So much laughter and friendships, and it’s just a good connection, everyone gets together.”
Once the game is over, everyone is already looking forward to the next game the following week and the continuation of new friendships everyone is forming during chair volleyball.
“It’s a bond we’ve got going here,” Smith said. “We look forward to it, I know I do.”
For anyone interested in joining chair volleyball in Dugger, IN, all someone has to do is head down to the community center at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday mornings to meet with the rest of the group.
