TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A 19-year-old charged with three counts of attempted murder stemming from a shooting in Vigo County in March of 2024 was scheduled to be in court Wednesday for a pretrial hearing.
According to court documents, Chazz Courtney allegedly shot three people—Robert Trump, Robert’s mother, Gale Trump, and Robert’s stepfather, Jason Heistand— after an altercation at a local gas station.
A Probable Cause Affidavit (PCA) states that Courtney confronted Robert Trump at a gas station located at 13th and Poplar, in Terre Haute, accusing him of being a “snitch.”
After leaving the gas station, Trump returned home, where his mother, stepfather, his girlfriend, and three others were. Trump told police that while at home that night, he could see someone shining a light into his bedroom.
Trump told police that when he looked out the window, he recognized a minivan that was with Courtney from the altercation at the gas station and could see that Courtney was the one shining the light, according to court documents.
The PCA goes on to say Courtney then knocked on the front door of the home and began talking with Trump’s mother and stepfather. Courtney then allegedly told them Trump was a snitch before being asked to leave.
At this time, Trump told police, he retrieved his mother’s handgun and came downstairs.
According to court documents, after being asked to leave, Courtney then “removed a firearm from his waistband and began firing.”
“Robert advised he then exchanged gunfire with Chazz as Chazz began running to the north. Robert advised Chazz, then cut to the west between buildings, where he lost sight of him,” said court documents.
During the exchange of gunfire, Gale Trump and Jason Heistand were shot multiple times, according to court documents. Robert Trump was also allegedly hit in the left buttocks.
Courtney has been charged with three counts of attempted murder, two counts of aggravated battery, one count of battery by means of a deadly weapon, and one count of criminal recklessness.
Courtney will appear in court next for his jury trial on October 20.
