PARKE COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Recently, the Parke County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a potential scam.
A local elderly couple received a message that their bank was compromised and requested that they withdraw all of their savings.
The couple was then instructed on other specifics, such as how to wrap the cash, where to go, to take a picture of themselves holding it, and more.
This unnerved the couple, and this is when they reached out to local law enforcement. The police stationed themselves at and around the couple’s house and arrested the courier when she arrived on the scene.
The Parke County police department also worked with Homeland Security to apprehend the courier. Authorities say it was later found out that the courier had flown from Florida two days before she was intended to pick up the cash and was based out of Chicago.
“In this particular case, with it being an elderly couple, you know they were handing over their life savings. the money that they were fixed on living the rest of their life with, and they were going to hand it over in a box decorated in Christmas wrapping, you know. So, that hurts even worse because you know that it was all they had left,” said Deputy Kyle Stonebraker at the Parke County Sheriff’s office.
If you receive any call or message from an unknown contact, immediately verify information with your bank and contact local police.
