TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— Dr. Janie Myers was recently awarded the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Unification Award from the American Osteopathic Association for her work in the DEI initiatives in the osteopathic community.
Dr. Myers has been a doctor for several years and is a firm believer that increasing minority representation in healthcare can help improve outcomes for entire communities. Dr. Myers is the founder and owner of Myers Surgical Associates, the only minority-owned healthcare facility in the Wabash Valley. She is also the only physician in Terre Haute to have the status of being a Distinguished Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons.
Dr. Myers has long been an active leader and advocate in both the professional and community settings. She is a Medical Board Advisor for the Wabash Valley Breast Cancer Survivors and a Providence Health Board member. She has previously held leadership roles with the Minority Health Coalition of Terre Haute, the League of Women Voters, and the Vigo-Parke-Vermillion Medical Society. She has also been the former Chair of the Black Business Alliance and a former board member on the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce. She also made history by becoming the first minority woman elected to a countywide office in Vigo County when she became the County Coroner.
Dr. Myers was nominated for this award back in May of this year and found out in early August that she became the winner of this prestigious award. She will be presented this award during the OMED 2025 conference that the American Osteopathic Association is hosting on September 25th in Nashville, Tenn.
Dr. Myers was excited and honored to win this award, but mentioned that she doesn’t do her work just to earn awards.
“I was in the office and I made a little whoop,” Dr. Myers said. “I was so excited, and I’m humbled by the fact that I won it. I love helping the community, I love the people, and the fact that someone is actually seeing this, and I’m not looking for praise and awards. That just means something; it just has a special place in your heart.”
She also mentioned that she takes great pride in representing part of the minority in the medical field.
“As being one of the people as part of the minority, I take it as a great honor that what I’m doing currently today is actually improving the healthcare for all, for this community as well as nationally,” Dr. Myers said. “I represent less than 1% in the community, and I do think that what I do will inspire others. But the main thing I like about it is the fact that I’m able to help others.”
Dr. Myers is board-certified in General Surgery, and if anyone wants to reach out to her for any surgical needs or to learn more about Dr. Myers and what she does, you can call her office at 930-219-1500 or visit her website for more information.
