RILEY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— Indiana State Athletics and the Vigo County School Corporation began their second year of “High Five Fridays” on August 22nd at Riley Elementary School.
Each Friday during the fall and spring semesters members of ISU Athletics along with Sycamore Sam will visit a different elementary school and welcome the students with high fives and excitement for the school day. The Spirit Squad and Sycamore Sam were at Riley this week.
This is part of a partnership between ISU and VCSC that they renewed for the 2025-2026 school year. Spirit Squad Coach and Community Service Coordinator Tammy Shike mentioned that this partnership will involve more than just visiting the elementary schools on Fridays.
“We’re going to be inviting a few of the schools to have their nights at basketball games,” Shike said. “That’s going to look like some of the schools will be able to come in and they’ll be reduced tickets or children will get in for free. Have some sing the national anthem. We’re really tightening that partnership with the Vigo County School Corporation.”
This partnership between ISU and VCSC will also allow for middle and high school students to benefit from getting to interact with members of Indiana State Athletics.
“This year, we are kicking off now a pilot program called sycamore buddies that will work one of our athletes with one of the middle school students in all five of our middle schools,” Shike said. I’m also going to be working with the CEO program this year, so that puts our athletic department in everything from early childhood through high school.”
The next “High Five Friday” will be on August 29th. Sycamore Sam and the ISU Softball team will visit Farrington Grove Elementary.
