FARMERSBURG, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Several Farmersburg residents have reported extreme flooding and sewer issues.
Recent summer showers have homeowners in the northern part of the town, like Herman Sparks, saying the flooding is the worst they’ve ever seen.
“This has been going on for a long time down here in Farmersburg, I’m talking years”, Sparks said. “It started back even when my mother’s home was here, but it’s getting worse now. I don’t know if something has changed, something major somewhere.”
Residents in the area are right next to the Vigo County and Sullivan County line. Sparks said the water from a field in Vigo County comes down through his property.
“That’s the one reason the ditches are flooding so bad because of all that water, it’s like a river coming down this road out here”, Sparks said. “It just covers everything here.”
Sparks’s home now needing major repairs.
“It floods up into the back of the house and floods across the neighbors fields right over here, then comes in and gets my foundation all wet”, Sparks said. “My floor joists get soaked and it causes mold under the house from all the moisture.”
At the end of July, an inspection was performed by a representative of the Indiana Department of Environmental Management. The representative concluded that sewers were overloaded due to heavy rainfall and there were potential issues with lift station pumps.
Last week, at the Farmersburg Town Board meeting, residents continued to express their frustration to a representative from an engineering firm. The town board said a major drainage project was done last year, but a problem still perists.
Just a few days ago, the IDEM Enforcement Case Manager requested an additional action plan to address the ongoing issues. IDEM is currently in the process of reviewing the plan.
