TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— Rose-Hulman’s Mechanical Engineering Department is looking for community-based projects that senior students can work on for their capstone projects.
The school is seeking meaningful ways for students to contribute to the community. The projects must be completed during the 2025-2026 school year, and ideas must be submitted by August 22, 2025.
The capstone program groups teams of three to five students with a faculty instructor and a client project. The projects are especially aimed towards historically marginalized groups, persons with disabilities, and groups experiencing disadvantages in the Wabash Valley. Some recent projects include an educational stream table for the Montessori Academy of Terre Haute, an accessible bus map in collaboration with the City of Terre Haute, and a transitional housing shelter for individuals experiencing homelessness.
The mechanical engineering department invites local organizations, including municipal or non-profit entities, or any individuals who could benefit from a student-led engineering solution, to submit their proposals. Clients will be expected to meet regularly with the student team throughout the year.
Clients are strongly encouraged to provide financial support for the projects when possible, though limited donor-supported funds are available for select community projects. Student teams will also be invited to demonstrate their completed project at the annual Rose Show held at the end of the academic year.
Project submissions can be sent to Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and mechanical engineering capstone coordinator Shraddha Sangelkar, PhD, at mecapstone@rose-hulman.edu. Visit the program website for more information.
