TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— The Vigo County Commissioners approved a road safety grant totaling $500,000 during their weekly meeting.
The county will fund $100,000 of the grant and the federal government will match that with $400,000 to make the total $500,000. This grant will allow the county and an outside source to study the roads in the county and see which ones need the most improvement to make then safer for traffic.
This grant will mainly focus on county roads and not highways, state roads, or roads within the city limits unless the county road that is in need of the safety improvements intersects with one of these other types of roads.
Vigo County Commissioner Mark Clinkenbeard says a grant like this can be very beneficial to the community like similar projects in the past have done.
“Maybe there’s issues like we’ve had, you know, on Springhill Road, we saw that we got that fixed over the last few years,” Clinkenbeard said. “There are still lots of areas where we can improve our safety in our traffic flow and this will help with that.”
The Vigo County Commissioners meet every Tuesday morning at 9:00 a.m. and it is free for the public to attend the meetings. The meetings are held in the council chambers at the Vigo County Annex building.
