TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — RAM is a nonprofit medical clinic that is based out of Tennessee, but this weekend, it made a pitstop in the Wabash Valley to provide free dental cleanings, fillings, extractions, eyes exams, prescription glasses, and other general medical care for those in need.
“Some folks they just don’t have access to it. They waited all day in some cases just to be seen in dental and get that care that they so desperately needed and so it’s a privilege to be able to deliver that to folks,” said Brad Sands, Medic Coordinator for Remote Area Medical.
In Terre Haute alone, the nonprofit saw over 200 patients between Saturday and Sunday.
With the help of hundreds of volunteers from across the United States, the mission of the clinic is to help those who are uninsured or under-insured.
“Not everybody has insurance coverage for these ancillary services like dental and vision. People can come in same day and get glasses, come in same day and get extractions and cleanings, so it’s a really huge thing,” said Emily Proctor, nurse practitioner student and student volunteer.
One of the local RAM volunteers said he was extremely impressed with the team and equipment and was happy to assist many people, including children with immediate dentistry needs.
“Took out a tooth on a little boy and he needed a lot of work done, but he couldn’t quite handle everything so today was more about getting him out of pain and he’s going to have to figure out where to go for the remainder of the treatment,” said Ben Cvengros, General Dentist at Crown Hill Dentistry in Clinton.
Last year, the remote area medical nonprofit served over 36,000 people across the country and this year, RAM is celebrating 40 years of health, hope, and humanity.
