TERRE HAUT, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Some local high school students spent part of their summer exploring possible healthcare careers.
Wednesday, Ivy Tech held a celebration ceremony for 19 students who completed their healthcare academy.
The academy was funded by United Healthcare and took place over an eight-week period.
Students earned academic credits and skills training. They also got to see local health care facilities and how medical professionals do their jobs.
Officials said there’s a need for more health care workers, so introducing students to these careers was important.
“Whether it’s nursing, non-nursing, long-term care facilities, acute care, there’s a huge need for healthcare workers in our community, and really, this is to get students exposed to all those careers so they can really set their future in college and their dual-credit course work, while they are in high school,” said David Will, Executive Director of Ivy Tech and Career Link at Terre Haute Campus.
He said next summer, in addition to the health care academy, Ivy Tech plans to offer an IT Academy and manufacturing academy.
