TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— The Terre Haute City Council continues its focus on historic preservation in the city.
Monday, was the first committee meeting introducing an ordinance aimed at establishing formal historic preservation districts and a Historic Preservation Commission. If passed, the ordinance will establish a Historic Preservation Commission tasked with overseeing the identification, restoration, and protection of historic areas.
The group would be responsible for the approval or denial of changes to historic properties.
Board President of the Terre Haute City Council Todd Nation said Terre Haute does not have any protections in place for historic properties.
“We are one of the biggest cities, if not the biggest city in the state of Indiana that doesn’t have any protections at all in place for historic properties. And we’re moving to address that,” Nation said.
The committee will discuss whether or not to approve this ordinance on August 20th.
