LINTON, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A new program in the Wabash Valley is helping make sure children in need have a happy birthday.
The effort is called “Eat Your Cake Too” and currently serves Sullivan County and the City of Linton.
Families going through hardship can apply for a “birthday in a box” for their kids. It provides a cake, gifts and the items needed to throw a birthday party.
Co-Founder Jessalyn Norris said that since Wednesday, they have received almost 100 applications for the boxes.
“People are really grateful and it’s very relatable in a way as a parent whenever they share stories of ‘it’s not that, you know I don’t care’ or that ‘I didn’t know that this was coming up’, it was that ‘times are hard’, hey this happened or this happened,” said Norris. “People are really grateful. I’ve gotten got a lot of tearful hugs so far.”
Norris said with their non-profit status pending the program is currently funded by private donors, but they hope to be able to apply for grants in the future. She added that they also hope to eventually expand the program to serve more counties.
