TERRE HAUTE, Ind (WTWO/WAWV) — In Terre Haute, TCC gave away hundreds of free backpacks over the weekend.
TCC is a Verizon retailer, and this event was their 13 annual in-store backpack giveaway.
Every year they put on this event at not only all of their stores in Indiana, but across the country.
People packed into the Verizon parking lot before the doors were open. The event helps local students to get a head start for their upcoming school year.
“It helps you know, boost confidence. Helps with like you don’t feel alone that much, cause your like, oh you know, I got this backpack, you know. My community’s providing for me,” said community member Bentley Smith.
Staff members kept families entertained in the heat with many activities like water balloons, bubbles, and chalk. Community organizations such as the Terre Haute Children’s Museum and local firefighters partnered with Verizon for the event, with a mission of giving back to the community.
“The funding is not there for you know a lot of kids to just be able to get these things or it’s such a burden on parents that this is just a way that we give back every year and take a little bit of pressure off parents,” said Mason.
After this weekend LCC will have given away more than 3 million dollars’ worth of backpacks, all to help support students across the country.
