BLOOMFIELD, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for west central Indiana, and Greene County is opening up cooling centers in response.
The heat wave is set to begin Wednesday afternoon and last until Thursday night. We are expecting multiple days of above-normal temperatures and high dewpoints. Afternoon heat index values are near or above 100 degrees most days.
Prolonged exposure to extreme heat can lead to serious health risks, especially for the young, old, and those with chronic conditions. The Greene County Health Department lists these tips to help stay safe during the intense heat:
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
- Limit Outdoor Activities: Avoid strenuous activity during peak heat hours (10 a.m. – 6 p.m.).
- Use Air Conditioning: If you don’t have access to AC, visit a designated cooling center.
- Never Leave Children or Pets in Vehicles: Even for a minute.
- Check on Neighbors: Especially the elderly, those living alone, or anyone without air conditioning.
- Watch for heat illness: Symptoms like dizziness, nausea, rapid heartbeat, or confusion could signal heat exhaustion or heat stroke. In severe cases, call 911 immediately.
