SULLIVAN CO., Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— Sullivan County EMA Director Jim Pirtle wants to encourage all residents to sign up for the county’s Codered Program to help be alerted about severe weather and more.
This program will alert residents about any severe weather in the area by text, phone call, or even email in the event a severe weather alert is sent out from the National Weather Service.
This program can also be used to alert residents or missing people, road closures, and so much more. Residence can sign up online by clicking the link here or by texting SULLIVANCO to 24639.
Pirtle wants to make sure everyone in the county is same for severe weather, especially after the area was hit with a tornado two years ago.
“The first thing is about keeping the public safe from severe weather,” Pirtle said. “Tornadoes, earthquakes, winter storms, ice storms, things like that. The main thing we all know is tornadoes happen. We got hit two years ago. So my big, main focus is weather.”
He also wants the citizens to know that this is a safe program and not to worry about scam messages.
“People worry about what kind of, you know, if they put their phone number in and what kind of stuff’s happening if I get scammed, if I get hacked with your phones,” Pirtle said. “This is not what that is; this is to protect the public.”
If anyone wants to sign up for this program in Sullivan County but is having issues signing up online. Pirtle encourages anyone to come to his office, and they can help with the sign-up process. His office is open Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and it is located at 60 W Harris St. in Sullivan, Ind.
