TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— Recent stormy weather in the valley has brought with it some strong winds.
Those winds have caused trees and limbs to fall, some into roadways. Now, some residents are asking, what do I do if I drive up on debris in the road? Sgt. Matt Ames with the Indiana state police said, activate your hazard lights, and call 911 right away. He said you should not get out of your car and try to move it yourself, due to the danger of oncoming traffic.
“The most important thing is if you’re driving, you see something that’s down in the middle of the roadway, activate your hazard lights and call 911,” said Ames. “We know you want be a good motorist and a good citizen and get out your vehicle and try to remove that debris out of the roadway for other vehicles, but unfortunately, sometimes people are not paying attention to too concerned about the rain the wind and everything’s going on And we don’t want that individual getting struck.”
Sgt. Ames said they have been getting lots of calls about debris on I-70. He said, don’t drive distracted, and put your headlights on if you are driving in the rain.
