SULLIVAN COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Many justice systems around the Wabash Valley have turned to recovery treatment programs in their jails and Sullivan County is now doing the same.
The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office has announced they will be teaming up with a non-profit, Quality 360 Healthcare, to bring a recovery treatment program to the jail for inmates.
Sheriff Jason Bobbitt said they’ve been working on bringing this to the county for over a year.
“Q360 is in, I think the last I looked, close to 30 jails in the state of Indiana”, Bobbitt said. “It’s just something that we’ve needed for a long time. If we can help one person, it’s worth the whole effort.”
The program will not cost local residents any money.
“It’s of no cost to the taxpayers of Sullivan County”, Bobbitt said. “It’s a grant from the state of Indiana that is supported by the Indiana Sheriff’s Association.”
Sheriff Bobbitt said more programs like this are needed as mental health issues are on the rise.
“There are no state hospital beds anymore for the mentally ill, so unfortunately, a lot of times, those people end up incarcerated”, Bobbitt said. “They make a bad decision; this place is full of decent people who made a bad decision. However, they make a bad decision and they come here, but its not always the best place for them. While they’re here and they’re clean, maybe we can help keep them clean and get them clean and on the right track.”
Once individuals have completed their assessments, Sullivan County will look at future plans such as community housing to maintain support.
